TOWN AND URBAN

The fabric of a town or city tells the story of its people. In over forty years of practice in architecture and urban design, Newman Architects has sought to contribute to towns and cities, and to the people who live in them, through sensitive planning and design. We believe that a city's built fabric is a work of architecture, and that individual buildings and open places should express their roles within this larger architectural work.

Streets are the most important spaces in cities. At their confluences, streets can become squares, which are like outdoor living rooms for the public. Buildings form the walls of the street. They describe another terrain of life and activity in the city, and shield from the life of the street a pattern of yards, courts, and gardens. These complement the street, providing a realm that is outdoors, but private. Within this simple matrix, the structure of cities everywhere, the yet unimagined and the known can side by side find a place.
